Trying to work with your data manually
Historically, nonprofits would collect data and then somebody would go through that data to analyze it and decide who to reach out to. If your dataset is small enough, and you tend to do most of your outreach 1:1, this can work. But it’s labor-intensive, and non-scalable.
The other option here is to hire a data analysis firm to work with larger datasets to analyze them and make suggestions for you, but this can get pricey, and there are other ways you can use your resources.

On the other side of the spectrum, you’ve got people who don’t even bother trying to hack through all that information, and instead, play the numbers game when it comes to fundraising. If you just get your information in front of enough people, then surely a big enough percentage of them will donate so you can meet your goals, right?
Well. Maybe. Or maybe not. Either way, you’re going to be spending a whole lot more time, money, and energy than you need to in order to meet your fundraising goals.

Lastly, you’ve got those people in the middle who collect data about their donors, have every intention of analyzing it and using it to make smart predictions about who to reach out to next… but just never quite get things off the ground when it comes to outreach.
