3 Absolutely Optional Things that Make Fundraising Way Harder Than It Needs to Be

Running a nonprofit is, theoretically, one of the best things in the world. You’re helping people who really need it, scaling impact, and generally making the world a better place. It would be awesome … if only you didn’t need to constantly hustle for funding to keep the lights on.

The truth is, fundraising is always going to take some work. But it doesn’t have to be nearly as difficult as you think. New advances in data science are making it way easier to work with your active donors and reach out to prospects. Of course, that’s all contingent on you actually using data science … and most nonprofits don’t do that. Which leads to the 3 most common ways organizations make fundraising harder for themselves:

Trying to work with your data manually

Historically, nonprofits would collect data and then somebody would go through that data to analyze it and decide who to reach out to. If your dataset is small enough, and you tend to do most of your outreach 1:1, this can work. But it’s labor-intensive, and non-scalable.

The other option here is to hire a data analysis firm to work with larger datasets to analyze them and make suggestions for you, but this can get pricey, and there are other ways you can use your resources.

Throwing spaghetti at the wall

On the other side of the spectrum, you’ve got people who don’t even bother trying to hack through all that information, and instead, play the numbers game when it comes to fundraising. If you just get your information in front of enough people, then surely a big enough percentage of them will donate so you can meet your goals, right?

Well. Maybe. Or maybe not. Either way, you’re going to be spending a whole lot more time, money, and energy than you need to in order to meet your fundraising goals.

Collecting great data and not using it

Lastly, you’ve got those people in the middle who collect data about their donors, have every intention of analyzing it and using it to make smart predictions about who to reach out to next… but just never quite get things off the ground when it comes to outreach.

And we get it. Getting this kind of project all the way over the line can be tough, especially if you’re already at capacity with all the other things that go into running your organization.

That’s why we created boodleAI — to help nonprofit organizations just like you make fundraising easy by doing all of this work for you, and then some. Find out how we can make fundraising the least stressful part of your job right here.
